World Health Organization: 115,000 caregivers likely died from Covid-19

Bad equipment and poor distribution of vaccines: According to WHO estimates, tens of thousands of nurses worldwide have died as a result of a corona infection.

According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), around 115,000 nurses worldwide could have died of Covid-19 in the first 16 months of the corona pandemic.

The organization attributes this to, among other things, poor facilities, especially at the beginning of the pandemic, and insufficient distribution of vaccines in poorer countries. In Africa, only ten percent of nurses have been vaccinated against the coronavirus, in most rich countries it is 80 percent.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus appealed to the largest economies, the G20, to make new efforts for a fairer distribution of vaccines at its summit in Rome from October 30th. The WHO had called for no booster vaccinations to be given, except for particularly vulnerable people, while millions of people in poorer countries are waiting for their first vaccination. That was ignored: “Countries with high and middle incomes have now given almost half as many booster vaccinations as were distributed in the countries with low income in the first place,” said Tedros.

The WHO aims for 40 percent of people in all countries to be vaccinated by the end of the year. For this, 500 million vaccine doses are needed, as much as can be produced in around ten days. But much of it goes, according to the WHO, to rich countries that are setting up camps for booster vaccinations.

It could be difficult for 82 countries to hit the 40 percent target, Tedros said. In three-quarters of these countries, the only problem is that not enough vaccine is available. Tedros asked the rich countries to refrain from vaccine deliveries in favor of the poorer countries for the time being.
