Integration officer on taking in refugees “We can do it”

Many counties complain about overcrowding due to the growing number of refugees. Latif Hamayieh Al-Hommsi, Hesse’s integration officer, believes that the municipalities could do a lot more.

The sound gets rougher again. This was most recently noticed in Upahl, a small community in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where residents organize protests and prevent the construction of refugee homes. Or in the Franconian town of Miltenberg, where a green district administrator sends fire letters to Berlin: We can’t do it, we can’t do it anymore, there are simply too many.

1.3 million refugees arrived in Germany in 2022 alone, more than twice as many as in 2015 and 2016. 1,045,000 of them are Ukrainians. Cities and municipalities are responsible for these people. They have to find accommodation and distribute beds, create space in kindergartens and schools. And are increasingly reaching their limits.
