A giant bridge is to connect Calabria in southern Italy with the island of Sicily. Italy’s Transport Minister Matteo Salvini is pushing ahead with his prestigious project – despite the risks.
Heavy storms, strong currents, meter-high waves, wind speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour – all this is not uncommon on the Strait of Messina: The weather turbulence seems like a challenge made for a man who sees himself as someone who sees himself destined to be bigger .
The man is Italy’s Transport Minister Matteo Salvini. His project: a bridge from the Italian mainland to Sicily. According to the will of Italy’s transport minister, a suspension bridge with a main span of 3.3 kilometers is to swing across the strait. The structure would be three times longer than the Golden Gate Bridge. Many have failed in the project – Salvini now wants to master it.
