Since the beginning of the year, the Republicans have regained control of the US House of Representatives. Above all, President Biden wants to assert his environmental policy with vetoes against the new majorities.
US President Joe Biden yesterday used the second veto of his term. It was about a resolution that would have overridden a directive issued by Biden to protect water. With the directive, Biden’s government had given the US environmental agency more extensive powers to protect water bodies from pollution.
Mostly Republicans, but also some Democrats, had described the guideline as too restrictive and a burden on agriculture, according to reports from the broadcaster CNN. The resolution had previously been passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate.
It is Biden’s second veto during his tenure and also the second in just a few weeks. With his first veto, the President defended a policy that allows pension fund managers to consider factors such as climate change, environmental protection and social influences in their investment decisions.
With his vetoes, Biden is trying to assert his policy against the new majority structure in the House of Representatives, where the Republicans have been in control since the beginning of the year.
