70 percent of the global healthcare workforce is female. SPD Minister Schulze says: “Women have knowledge that we need to avoid and fight diseases.”
On the occasion of World Health Day, Development Minister Svenja Schulze recalled the central role of women in healthcare.
“Without women, no health system in the world would work,” said the SPD politician. Relying on women is a key lever for better health worldwide.
“Women have innovative ideas, women have the knowledge that we need to prevent and combat diseases. As part of feminist development policy, we are therefore looking at women both as professionals and as patients,” said Schulze.
70 percent of healthcare workers are women
The aim is for women to have the same rights to medical care and appropriate treatment as men. According to Schulze, they should also be equally represented as men in decision-making bodies and management positions in the healthcare system.
According to the German Development Ministry, women currently make up 70 percent of the workforce in the healthcare sector, but only 25 percent of managers. Women make up half of the world’s population, but therapies and drugs are often tailored to men.
World Health Day is celebrated annually on April 7th and commemorates the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. This time the motto is “Health for All”.
