British intelligence services assume that the Kremlin troops have advanced to the city center. One possible explanation: the Russian army and Wagner mercenaries could work together better again.
According to British intelligence services, Russian troops have gained ground in the embattled Ukrainian city of Bakhmut in the past few days.
The Russians are now very likely to have advanced into the city center of the eastern Ukrainian city and taken the west bank of the Bakhmutka River, according to the short report by the British Ministry of Defence. For the Ukrainians, this means that an important transport route for supplies is at considerable risk.
After the Russians had made little progress since the end of March, Moscow had significantly increased its presence in the affected area and used more artillery again, the British said. London also believes it is possible that tensions between regular Russian armed forces and the Wagner mercenaries fighting for Moscow have subsided and both sides are once again cooperating more successfully.
Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the British Ministry of Defense has published daily updates on the progress of the war. Citing intelligence information, the British government wants to both counter the Russian account and keep allies in line.
Moscow accuses London of a disinformation campaign.
