At least 51 people are killed in two attacks on a village in Nigeria. According to the authorities, it could be a conflict over grazing land.
Unidentified gunmen have killed at least 51 people in two attacks in West African Nigeria, officials said. Dozens of attackers invaded the village of Umuogidi in Benue state on Monday and Tuesday, regional politician Bako Ejeh told the German Press Agency on Friday.
Local authorities suspected the attacks were carried out by cattle herders; among the victims, however, are mainly farmers, according to Ejeh.
Conflicts over fertile land, which is needed both for growing food and for grazing livestock, are increasing in the country of 206 million people. The pastoralists of the Fulani ethnic group in northern Nigeria are increasingly foraging for their animals in southern and central Nigeria. The Fulani have a long nomadic tradition.
