Human rights: UN: Number of migrants who died in the Mediterranean Sea has risen sharply

Thousands of people lose their lives on the way to Europe in hope of a better life. The United Nations are sounding the alarm: it has been a long time since there have been as many deaths as there are now.

According to a UN organization, 441 migrants died in the first three months of 2023 while fleeing across the Mediterranean. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Wednesday in Geneva that so many deaths had not been registered in the Mediterranean Sea in the first quarter of a year since 2017. She attributed the rising number to delays in government rescue efforts and obstructions to non-governmental rescue ships. In 2022, 334 deaths were registered from January to March, in 2017 there were 742.

According to the IOM, delays in six state-led rescue operations in the first three months of 2023 resulted in the deaths of at least 127 people. At least 73 migrants died due to the lack of a response to a seventh case. “The ongoing humanitarian crisis in the central Mediterranean is unbearable,” said IOM Director General António Vitorino. More than 20,000 people have died on this route since 2014. “The states must react.” Proactive search and rescue coordination is needed.

According to the IOM, more than the 441 people registered may have died in the first three months of 2023. There are also cases where boats are reported missing but there are no records of survivors and casualties, the IOM said. According to the IOM, around 3,000 migrants reached Italy on the Easter weekend alone. This increased the number of people who arrived this year to 31,192.
