Today it will be official: The CDU leader Armin Laschet is stepping down as Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Armin Laschet (CDU) will officially resign from office as Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia today.
The 60-year-old future member of the Bundestag had already announced the move before the Bundestag election – also in the event that he fails as the Union’s candidate for chancellor.
As soon as the new Bundestag has been constituted on Tuesday, Laschet’s deputy, NRW Family Minister Joachim Stamp (FDP), will temporarily become the provisional head of government in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is expected that NRW Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) will be elected as the new Prime Minister in a special session of the state parliament on Wednesday. The 46-year-old was named head of the CDU country at the weekend and has already inherited Laschet in this office.
With Laschet as candidate for chancellor in the federal election almost four weeks ago, the Union had a historically poor result.
