Society: Esken: AI can do boring work

Will the use of artificial intelligence cost jobs? The SPD leader counters fears – and sees the change in the world of work as an opportunity.

SPD leader Saskia Esken has countered fears that the use of artificial intelligence could mean lost jobs. “This fear exists with every leap in technology, and yet so far more new jobs have been created than have been replaced,” she told the newspapers of the Funke media group (Online Sunday/Print Monday).

In addition, there is already a large shortage of skilled workers. “My generation, the Boomers, is yet to retire, and the generation that’s supposed to replace us is half that size. So we have an urgent need to replace labor.” It applies to everyone that work is constantly changing. “So we should remain curious and open to change throughout our lives.”

Artificial intelligence can do boring jobs. “Then we can focus on the tasks that require human skills: empathy, creativity, thinking outside the box and solving complex, novel problems,” she explained.

However, the use of artificial intelligence should not be misused for monitoring in the workplace. “The legislature must ensure that.” Esken also warned of the dangers of artificial intelligence. This could be used to create “absolutely real-looking images, audio and videos”, which are, however, pure fakes. “For example, statements that seem authentic could be spread by politicians who never made them. This could lead to wars.” It must therefore be ensured that real recordings can be recognized as such – for example by being marked with a digital watermark.
