The transport sector is far from its climate targets. Does Transport Minister Wissing now have to present an immediate climate programme? Opinions seem to differ on this.
SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich sees Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) as having a duty to protect the climate. Presenting a climate protection program is “a joint task of the federal government and this includes all departments,” said Mützenich on Tuesday in Berlin. The federal government wants to meet the sector targets together. “Of course, the Minister of Transport must also participate accordingly,” said Mützenich.
The Greens parliamentary group leader Katharina Dröge expects Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to clarify climate protection in the transport sector. The federal government’s press conference the day before was “a bit confusing,” said Dröge in Berlin.
The background is an agreement by the traffic light coalition on a reform of the climate protection law. So far, individual ministers have had to submit an immediate climate protection program if climate targets are missed in their area. In the future, the federal government should make adjustments overall, albeit “on the basis of the proposals” of the mainly responsible ministries – if it becomes apparent in two consecutive years that the climate target for 2030 will not be achieved.
According to the current status, the reform should already be discussed in the cabinet on May 3rd, said Mützenich. Then it goes to the Bundestag. It is therefore controversial whether Wissing should submit an immediate program according to the old rules or not. The deadline for this is mid-July.
