The army and paramilitaries have been fighting each other in Sudan since Saturday, and the huge country is in danger of sliding into a civil war. What is behind the fights – and who?
For a long time, the two Sudanese military leaders only fought each other with words – since Saturday they have turned into bombs and grenades. Fierce fighting between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan of the Sudanese Army SAF and General Hamdan Daglo of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces RSF has shaken the country. In the capital, Khartoum, tanks rumble through streets and Migs fly low over Nile bridges over houses and bombard RSF bases. Their strength is estimated at a total of 100,000 men.
