Bärbel Bas elected as the new President of the Bundestag

In its constituent session, the German Bundestag elected an SPD member as President of the Bundestag. She received a clear majority – and sets out her goals in her inaugural speech.

The newly constituted Bundestag has elected the SPD MP Bärbel Bas as President of the Bundestag. In the very first ballot she received 576 of the 724 votes cast, more than the 369 required. There were 90 votes against and 58 abstentions.

Bas accepted the choice “with all my heart”. It replaces Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) after the SPD became the strongest force in parliament in the federal election on September 26th.

Bas is reminiscent of the first female President of the Bundestag

In her speech, Bas first remembered Annemarie Renger, who was the first female President of the German Bundestag from 1972 to 1976. Bas called the fact that she is only the third President of the Bundestag “not Rumreich”. She thanked the MPs for their trust. She will be the president of all MPs. She also thanked her predecessor Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU): “You have made a contribution to parliamentary democracy. Thank you very much!”

She also remembered the late Bundestag Vice President Thomas Oppermann (SPD), from whom she learned a lot. “On a day like today, I can feel that he’s missing,” says Bas. At the same time, she praised the diversity of the new Bundestag and called on the MPs to maintain more exchange with the citizens. Even those who turned away from politics should find themselves in parliament. “They are all important,” says Bas. “But let’s also take care of the middle of society”.

Election of their deputies begins

She also called on the political groups to put the right to vote on the agenda: “The citizens expect a reform that deserves the name.” Then she passed on to the election of her deputies.
