Germany has a new parliament: one month after the federal election, the newly elected Assembly of Representatives met for the first time in Berlin on September 26th. The previous President of Parliament, Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU), opened the session as the longest-serving member of the Bundestag. At its constituent meeting, the Bundestag elected Schäuble’s successor at the head of the House, assigned the deputy posts and also adopted new rules of procedure in which the previous set of rules was largely adopted.
With the constituent session of the Bundestag, the term of office of the previous black-red federal government ended in accordance with Article 69 of the Basic Law. After their dismissal by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Tuesday afternoon, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and her ministers are only in office at Bellevue Palace until a new government has been formed and can take over government affairs. According to the current planning of the SPD, Greens and FDP, this should happen in the week from December 6th. That means Germany is expected to have a caretaker government for around six weeks.

The new Bundestag differs from the old parliament in terms of both its size and its composition in terms of the age and gender of the deputies. On average, he is two years younger than his predecessor and has a larger proportion of women, as the statistics of the Federal Returning Officer show. In the distribution of occupations, however, not much has changed.
