The new Bundestag met for its first session on Tuesday. See what the proportion of women and the age distribution looks like in the political groups.
The 20th German Bundestag has 736 members – a record. Parliament met on Tuesday for its constituent session. The date also means the end of the previous government and thus the end of the Merkel era. The Chancellor will only remain in office until the new federal government is in place. Parliament itself already has a new head. Bärbel Bas was elected as the new President of the Bundestag – in terms of protocol the second highest office in the state.
Women in the Bundestag are still clearly in the minority
The SPD politician is the third woman in this position. she is one of 257 female members of parliament. The proportion of men is almost twice as high at 479. A look at the individual parliamentary groups shows that only the Greens and Leftists have more women than men in the parliamentary group.
