Podcast “important today”: Will the cryptocurrency Bitcoin be the new gold?

A tweet from Tesla CEO Elon Musk messes up the whole crypto market while a state like Venezuela tries to fight its hyperinflation with a cryptocurrency. Are bitcoins just a hype or are they here to stay?

How does the Bitcoin system actually work and how safe is this digital currency? In an interview with Michel Abdollahi, Prof. Philipp Sandner says in the podcast “important today”: “It has nothing to do with gambling”. Sandner heads the Blockchain Center at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management and is convinced that Bitcoin will stay with us for the next few years, maybe even decades. “There won’t be more than 21 million bitcoins and once you understand what this digital scarcity is all about, […] one comes to the conclusion: it could become something like digital gold.”

The cryptocurrency is difficult to grasp for many because everything takes place digitally. But that is exactly the advantage, Prof. Sandner is certain: “Bitcoin is decentralized, which means Bitcoin is a protocol, a computer program that runs on tens of thousands of computing nodes around the world. Accordingly, it has no central authority, no summoned address, no company, no foundation, nothing, but rather it is decentralized, pure technology. And that’s why nobody has been able to turn off Bitcoin in any way so far.” Of course, as with any system, you should be well informed and observe the market. A tip from the experts: Just start with 20 to 50 euros and get a feel for Bitcoin – and then you can buy Bitcoins in addition to other possible investments.

Will Julian Assange be extradited to the US?

A court in London is dealing with Julian Assange – the founder of Wikileaks – again today. In the podcast “important today” 11 years of legal disputes are clearly summarized. Julian Assange is, among other things, responsible for the fact that Wikileaks published hundreds of thousands of documents in 2010 that showed, for example, secret US activities in Iraq and Afghanistan. Or also for the fact that in 2015 it was revealed that even heads of state like Angela Merkel are being bugged by the USA. Nevertheless, Wikileaks and Assange himself are anything but undisputed.
