Energy: Media: Russian ships face explosions at Nord Stream

The explosions on the Nord Stream pipeline have been puzzling for a good six months. Who is behind this? A group of journalists have followed a hot lead – and it leads to Russia.

According to Scandinavian media, before the explosions on the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea, several Russian naval vessels were in the vicinity of the later explosion sites. This was reported by investigative journalists from Nordic broadcasters SVT from Sweden, NRK from Norway, DR from Denmark and Yle from Finland in the third and final episode of their joint documentary “Schattenkrieg” released on Wednesday. They cited radio communications between the ships and the Russian naval base, which a former British Navy intelligence officer intercepted, as well as satellite imagery.

Accordingly, in the months and days leading up to the detonations, the ships of the fleet spent hours and even a whole day in the areas where the explosions later occurred. The ships are said to have switched off their transmitters and thus traveled under the radar. A fleet ship with a switched off transmitter and the possibility of underwater operations, the tug “SB-123”, was at the explosion sites five days before the detonations, two others – the “Sibiryakov” and another, which was not identified – as early as June.

operation under water

A military analyst at the University of Copenhagen, Jens Wenzel Kristoffersen, told broadcasters all the information indicated operations were taking place under the water.

The Danish military confirmed to the newspaper “Information” almost a week ago that a patrol ship took a total of 26 pictures of the Russian special ship “SS-750” near the explosion sites on September 22, 2022. The ship features a mini submarine with grabbing arms. Four days later there were several explosions near Bornholm on the pipelines through which gas was delivered from Russia to Germany. The authorities assume sabotage. It is unclear who is responsible for this. Investigations are underway in Germany, Denmark and Sweden.

At the end of March, “t-online” reported, citing information from security circles and publicly available data, that Russian military ships were believed to have operated at the crime scenes a few days before the attacks on the pipelines – including the “SS-750” and the one now mentioned Tug “SB-123”.
