The EU Parliament will be re-elected next year and the head of the EU Commission will be newly appointed. The President is flirting with an extension, but there is a lack of support at home.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen apparently has little support from the German population. Like a Forsa poll for the star revealed that just 40 percent of citizens are in favor of the CDU politician being given a second term at the head of the EU Commission after the new elections to the EU Parliament next year. 48 percent are against an extension for von der Leyen. 12 percent did not answer.
Officially, the EU Commission President is holding back on the question of a second term. But in Brussels, her interest is considered safe. However, it is unclear whether von der Leyen would also be chosen as the top candidate of the European People’s Party. Against this background, the poll result weakens their position. Because even among the more pro-Europe supporters of the established parties, only half are in favor of von der Leyen. It is 51 percent for the CDU/CSU, FDP and Greens, and 50 percent for the SPD. 91 percent of the more Eurosceptic AfD voters reject a second term.
The data was collected by the market and opinion research institute forsa for the RTL Group Germany on May 4th and 5th, 2023. Database: 1005 respondents. Statistical error tolerance: +/- 3 percentage points
