A new right of assembly targets Pride parades and other demonstrations by non-heterosexual people. Protests against the project are planned in front of the parliament in Warsaw.
Poland’s parliament is today first reading a bill to ban demonstrations for equality for non-heterosexual people.
The draft to change the right of assembly was submitted by the Life and Family Foundation of pro-life activist Kaja Godek, who had collected the 140,000 necessary signatures.
The change stipulates that in future the goal of a public gathering must not be “questioning marriage as a relationship between women and men” or “promoting the expansion of marriage to include people of the same sex”. Also during demonstrations it is not allowed to advertise the adoption of children by homosexual couples and for a “sexual orientation other than heterosexual”. The bill is primarily aimed at the Pride parade and other demonstrations by the LGBT community. The abbreviation stands for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.
Protests and political propaganda
The organization All-Polish Women’s Strike, which was in charge of the protests against stricter abortion law last year, called for a demonstration in front of parliament against the draft law under the motto “Hate Free Zone”.
Many politicians from Poland’s national conservative ruling party PiS are openly campaigning against the LGBT community. Almost a hundred cities and regions have declared themselves “LGBT ideology-free” zones. Most of them are in the strongly Catholic east and south of the country. Most recently, several regions revoked this status after the EU Commission suspended negotiations on regional funding.
In Hungary, a new law has been in force since June, according to which children are not allowed to have access to information about non-heterosexual lifestyles – be it in school lessons or through publications. In addition, advertising that portrays homosexuals or transsexuals as part of normality is prohibited. The EU Commission has therefore initiated infringement proceedings against Hungary.
In Russia, speaking positively about homosexuals in the presence of children is a criminal offense. There has long been international protest against this ban on “gay propaganda”, which has been in force since 2013.
