Refugees: Union for border controls to Poland

In the first four months, more than 100,000 requests for protection were made to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. The Union is now also demanding that the border to Poland be temporarily controlled.

The Union faction wants Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) to order checks at several additional border sections because of the increased number of unauthorized entries. In an application that was decided at a meeting, the Union calls on the federal government to “temporarily expand the controls taking place on the German-Austrian border to the internal borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland, now notified to Europe, adapted to the situation and in conjunction with modern internal border searches , as long as the excessive number of illegal entries continues”. Cooperation with the local state police should also be improved if necessary, “in order to be able to control the most heavily affected border sections as completely as possible.”

The domestic political spokesman for the parliamentary group, Alexander Throm, justified the request, among other things, with the increase in the number of asylum applications. In the first four months, more than 100,000 requests for protection were made to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. “There is no good reason for Nancy Faeser to extend border controls to Austria, but not at the much heavier border with Poland, for example,” said Throm.
