The Joshua Kimmich debate is entering the next round. Also at “Maybrit Illner” pressure was put on the Bayern player. But not everyone played along.

Where is Helene Fischer actually? After all, she knows her way around “Breathless through the night”. So she can also say something about the breathlessness of Covid 19 patients. Bit of a stretch, do you think? All right, then let’s at least leave Johannes B. Kerner behind “Maybrit Illner” to speak. He is a sports presenter and also knows his way around. So with sport. And with moderation. Good this way. Finally someone who could do a critical analysis. Because the other day there was this moral-inquisitorial Sky sports presenter who had zero respect for the individual vaccination decision of a Joshua Kimmich. Respect? What for? Where are we going? Well-known football players are role models, so don’t argue, go to the vaccination. At least that’s what Johannes B. Kerner thinks.
How to deal with the Joshua Kimmich case?
As I said, he is a sports presenter and therefore needs to know how to deal with Kimmich. His advice to its advisory staff: “I would grab the Kimmich and talk to him intensely.” Which doesn’t sound like Kimmich even has a choice. In short: Maybrit Illner started her show on Thursday evening to put further pressure on the Bayern Munich player. And also asked: “No protection, no freedom – lockdown for the unvaccinated?”.
It discussed:
- Alena Buyx, Chair of the German Ethics Council
- Sibylle Katzenstein, General practitioner in Berlin-Neukölln.
- Johannes B. Kerner, Sportmoderator
- Boris Palmer (Alliance 90 / The Greens), Lord Mayor of Tübingen
- Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit, Virology
- Peter Tschentscher (SPD), First Mayor of Hamburg
Now leave Kimmich alone. Boris Palmer warned. So someone who is very familiar with Shitstorms. Always this “Excitement and indignation democracy that does nothing better”. Kerner still complained that the footballer had argued wrongly and himself “galloped with the long-term consequences”. And added: “I am surprised that he is not properly informed.” Then he went one better by switching from sports moderator to medical doctor as quickly as possible. Kimmich claims loudly “Dr. Kerners” Diagnose his body “as a competitive athlete” especially and “therefore run the risk that it will have a particularly difficult course.” Later, Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit, who is not a sports presenter but is a medical professional, commented: “It is not a problem if a very healthy young footballer does not get vaccinated.” It was clear to him that he didn’t want to spend much time with Kimmich: “The discussion takes us away from the actual topic.” It is now a matter of urgently promoting the booster vaccinations for the over 60-year-olds.
Virologist Schmidt-Chanasit: Respect for one “no”
Alexa Buyx didn’t want Kimmich to get away with it so easily. After all, he is a role model. Oh, what, example. Sibylle Katzenstein made it clear that she “I don’t know a single patient who can be influenced by whether Spahn gets vaccinated and Kimmich doesn’t get vaccinated.” Role models played no role whatsoever in the individual vaccination decision. That too “Moral fuss doesn’t convince anyone”. The doctor has already vaccinated over 6,000 people, including many homeless people – over 6,000 more than Johannes B. Kerner – and so it stands to reason that she knows exactly what she is talking about. And it was beneficial to listen to her, because she appealed to humanity, something that has since gone out of fashion in many debates. Empathy and understanding for people who are unsure whether to get vaccinated. You have to be curious, ask about your motives and be ready to take fears seriously. Schmidt-Chanasit also agreed. It need “conversations based on trust.” And respect for a no: “You have to accept that there will be people who will not get vaccinated.”
Hamburg’s Lord Mayor Tschentscher: Normal life with 2G
And how about 2G? As is well known, Peter Tschentscher first and foremost bet in Hamburg: “As a result, a more normal life is possible again.” Objection from doctor Katzenstein. In their opinion, 2G is deceptive. You prefer 3G. Freshly tested people usually pose less of a risk than vaccinated people, who think they are in a false sense of security. She regularly sees it in her practice that people who have been vaccinated twice become infected. The reason: “Vaccinated people reduce the measures and become more negligent.” Would vaccinated people get a cold “don’t think you have Covid” – although that could be the case. Cat stone: “The epidemic situation is driven by vaccinated and unvaccinated people.” Well, if that’s the case, why keep vaccinated people higher at all, Illner wanted to know. You couldn’t say it that way, Buyx intervened, because you would have “Those who have been vaccinated have the lowest risk of infecting each other”. Then again Katzenstein: “But I experience it every day in my practice as it is.” Buyx in turn warned him “moral contribution” through the vaccination.
National emergency versus “Freedom Day”
But how are things going now? “I think lockdown for unvaccinated people is completely wrong”says Palmer. When does the state’s duty of care end? “You can’t chase after the unvaccinated person forever”, so Buyx. What does the announced end of the “Emergency of national concern”? You have to communicate that better, says Buyx. Otherwise she feared that the citizens would think that is synonymous with one “Freedom Day”. That upset Palme. Oh, what, don’t underestimate people. When you say “the emergency is over, but it’s still serious, it’s easy to understand.” Tschentscher opposed pushing ahead. One should hold on to the national emergency until the end of the year. That is the safest way to get through autumn and winter safely.

Worry about “patricharchal state” at Maybrit Illner
And there is one more thing. Tschentscher brought out legal arguments. As soon as the “epidemic situation of national importance” has been repealed, there is no legal basis for any measures that may still be necessary in the countries. Well, but at some point it has to be over. Palmer again as an understanding of the people. Citizens shouldn’t think that “Politicians want a patricharchal government”. So do the measures end on March 20th? “It’s brave to dare to do it”, so Buyx. And otherwise? Back to the confusion of federal rules? “I don’t know myself which rules apply in which federal state”Palmer confessed. Then Kerner, the sports presenter, meanwhile a medical doctor and now a politician, formulated his demand: “We don’t want a patchwork quilt.” Anything else? Unlike Anne Will last Sunday, Illner understood the topic of her show at least. If there are still questions, it is to be hoped that Helene Fischer can answer them next Thursday.
