Yes, yes, Bremen is a real federal state, and on Sunday they elect the citizens there. A non-social democrat has never governed there. Who is the man who would like to continue this tradition – and after 35 years has rediscovered the love of his youth?
Let’s first clarify a few basic things about the area he governs before we come to Andreas Bovenschulte personally. Its federal state is smaller than the Saarland, which means something, a lot smaller even, in the classic conversion scale: With its 420 square kilometers, it fits six times into the Saarland. So Bremen really is extremely small.
Nevertheless, no mini-state jokes are cracked about the Hanseatic city in the federal state rank like about the Saarland, which is probably due to the fact that nobody knows about the existence of the Bremen state unless there are state elections and the public broadcasters tell the rest of the republic – 99.19 percent – the television Sunday evening spoil with special programs and Berlin rounds.
