STORY: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj was received by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin on Sunday morning. He arrived at Bellevue Palace, where he sat down to talk with Steinmeier and signed the town’s guest book. This is the Ukrainian President’s first visit to Germany since the attack on his country began. Steinmeier met Zelenskyj in Kiev in October 2022. Chancellor Scholz will also meet Selenskyj during his visit. On Sunday afternoon he and the Ukrainian people will be honored with the Charlemagne Prize in Aachen for special services to Europe. Selenskyj came from Rome that night, where he met President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as well as Pope Francis. Zelenskyi presented Francis with a painting of a Madonna painted on a Ukrainian soldier’s bulletproof vest. At the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the Pope had taken a more balanced stance, but later condemned Russia’s attack in clear terms. At the end of April, Pope Francis declared that the Vatican was involved in a peacekeeping mission to end the war with Russia.
