After the citizenship election: Bovenschulte: Social security as a means against populists

After the electoral success of the right-wing populist Bürger in Wut (BiW) in Bremen, Mayor Bovenschulte sees social democratic virtues as the most important thing.

Bremen Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) sees strengthening social cohesion as a political task after the electoral success of the right-wing populist citizens in anger (BiW). People’s need for security must be given even greater consideration, he told the German Press Agency on Monday after the state elections in Bremen. “By that I mean not only internal security and order, but above all the question of social security, that you feel safe in society.”

The SPD wants to focus even more on these goals in the future: good economic development, the creation of well-paid jobs and a reduction in unemployment. On this basis, social security, better education and better integration can be created. Bovenschulte said that this was not a reaction to the angry citizens, “but that is our very own social democratic program”.

Bovenschulte won the election on Sunday with the SPD – with a share of around 30 percent of the votes. With a share of around ten percent, the citizens in anger are moving into parliament for the first time in fraction strength. The provisional official final result should be available after the end of the count on Wednesday.

Bovenschulte announced that he would be exploring with all democratic parties about forming a government. He ruled out the BiW: “It’s a right-wing populist party. There are no similarities in politics with them.”

Bremen has so far been governed by a coalition of the SPD, the Greens and the Left Party, which is unique in West Germany. This is still mathematically possible and is considered the most likely variant.
