Social Democrats: Former Chancellor Schröder not invited to SPD anniversary

The former chancellor is repeatedly criticized for his close ties to Putin – but he is still a member of the SPD. He is not invited to the 160th anniversary. He will still be seen in a video.

Former SPD chancellor Gerhard Schröder has not been invited to his party’s 160th anniversary in Berlin next week. “As long as he is close to the warmonger and aggressor here, as could be seen during the visit to the Russian embassy last week, we currently have nothing to communicate with one another,” said SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert on Tuesday in Berlin .

In a video about the history of the party, however, Schröder will be seen at the celebration on May 23. After all, he was “part of social democratic history,” said Kühnert. You will not distance yourself from that. “The rupture with Gerhard Schröder is not a historical rupture, but a current rupture that obviously has to do with his positioning in the context of Putin’s war against Ukraine.”

Despite his close ties to Russia, Schröder can now remain in the SPD for good. The applications to appeal against a corresponding decision by the SPD Arbitration Commission in Hanover were rejected on Monday by the Federal Arbitration Commission as inadmissible for formal reasons.
