According to Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, the language in the administration should be understandable – gender language could get in the way.
Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) has spoken out against gender language in the administration. The CDU politician justified this by saying that the language used in administration had to be understandable and pointed to immigrants, for example.
“We also expect people who come to Germany to learn German, and the authorities in particular shouldn’t make it unnecessarily difficult for them,” Wegner told the “Bild am Sonntag”. “Everyone can speak privately as they wish. But I would like to speak the German that I learned at school and that everyone understands,” Wegner continued.
On the official website of the city of Berlin, under the heading “gender-fair language”, you can read a note that the website will be adjusted “in order to do justice to the current changes in the Senate”. According to an RBB report, the website has so far advertised “saying goodbye to old speaking and thinking habits”. The basis was an administrative guide from 2012.
