With its consistent vaccination campaign and low case numbers, Israel is actually considered a role model. But the country’s health chief receives death threats – presumably from vaccination opponents.
The head of the public health service in Israel, Sharon Alroi Prize, receives police protection after death threats. According to media reports, the threats come from opponents of the vaccination against the corona virus.
A spokesman for the Minister of Homeland Security, Omer Bar-Lev, refused to confirm this on Sunday. The decision was made after a corresponding tweet from the husband, he said.
In the tweet, the husband writes of specific threats against his wife’s life, of published phone numbers on social networks and explicit threatening phone calls.
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Thursday: «The anti-vaccination war against Dr. Sharon Alroi-Price and others must stop. Ignore the fake news, get vaccinated. “
In a letter from the ministry to health care workers, there is also talk of “extreme” statements by opponents of government measures against the corona virus – especially those against vaccinations. Threats should also be reported to the superiors, it says there.
For a long time, Israel was considered a pioneer in the field of vaccination campaigns during the corona pandemic. The country started offering a third vaccination as a booster back in late July. Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of Health, 42 percent of the 9.4 million inhabitants have been vaccinated three times, 62 percent twice.
There is already a discussion about approving the vaccination of children between the ages of five and eleven in principle soon. The government has been allowing this age group to be vaccinated against the coronavirus in extreme exceptional cases since the end of July. The exceptions should apply to children who are particularly at risk of falling seriously ill or dying in the event of a corona infection, it said at the time.
The number of registered new infections has been falling significantly since the beginning of September. The ministry reported 224 new cases on Sunday for the previous day.
