Federal Police: Migration: border controls to Poland and the Czech Republic intensified

More and more migrants are entering the country illegally via the German borders in the east. Interior Minister Faeser rejects stationary border controls. Nevertheless, it reacts to the migratory pressure.

Because of the high level of irregular migration across the German-Polish and German-Czech borders, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) has initiated an increased deployment of the federal police. “The federal police have further intensified their manhunt.”

The local offices would be supported by mobile and flexible units, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The federal police have recently reinforced the border police forces in Saxony alone with two additional operational units of the federal riot police. They also made a significant contribution to combating human smuggling.

However, Faeser had opposed demands from Saxony and Brandenburg to set up stationary controls at the border with Poland and the Czech Republic. This emerges from a letter available to the dpa from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to the two CDU interior ministers of Brandenburg and Saxony. The Federal Ministry of the Interior had argued that a temporary reintroduction of internal border controls would require a serious threat to public order or internal security. Such a measure always has “ultima ratio character”.

Police union is skeptical

The police union (GdP) is skeptical about the introduction of stationary border controls at the borders with Poland and the Czech Republic. “Stationary border controls would not help us at all with an asylum application,” said the chairman Andreas Roßkopf to the RBB information radio. Anyone who applies for asylum at the border must be forwarded to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, which examines the application. “Only then can we ultimately reject.”

The trade unionist believes “flexible border controls” are necessary to counter professional smugglers. “If we were to set up stationary border controls, they would be bypassed by professional smuggling organizations within a very short time and would therefore also be pointless,” said Rosskopf. He spoke of a displacement effect in stationary border controls.

“Sharp increases in irregular migration”

The GdP chairman for the federal police and customs described the situation at the borders as worrying. “We have strong increases in irregular migration,” said Roßkopf.

In April, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the federal police had identified the most unauthorized entries from Poland. She registered 2,427 illegal entries across the border from Poland, while there were 1,298 unauthorized cases via Austria and 896 via the Czech Republic, according to a response to a request from the CDU member of the Bundestag Alexander Throm.

On Friday, Faeser wants to find out more on the spot in the German-Czech border area. In the Czech Republic, the Minister is visiting the Petrovice branch of the Joint Center for German-Czech Police and Customs Cooperation Petrovice-Schwandorf with her counterpart Vit Rakusan.
