Today, Tuesday, the National Vaccination Committee (NIG) is dealing with the recommendations for the so-called booster vaccination (see box). The EU Medicines Agency gives a green light for a refresher for people over 18 with the vaccines from Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna.
The board of directors of the University Clinic for Clinical Pharmacology at the Medical University of Vienna, Markus Zeitlinger, and the microbiologist Michael Wagner made a clear recommendation for the “third trick”. The infection numbers are currently clearly being driven by the unvaccinated, “but you can see that breakthrough infections are also increasing,” says Zeitlinger. He expects the third stitch to have a more lasting effect than after the first two vaccinations: “I assume that you have a much longer immunity after the third vaccination than after the second vaccination.” Zeitlinger would be in favor of a clear recommendation that everyone over the age of 18 get the “booster”. “It would be good if the National Vaccination Board made that clear.”
Wagner emphasizes that six months after the second bite, a clear decrease in the vaccination effect can be seen. Above all, the protection against infection then goes “very far down”, even for young people from the age of 18.
Vienna rushes forward
In Vienna, the decision of the NIG was anticipated: From now on, all vaccinated persons can have their corona vaccination refreshed from six months after the second sting – in Vienna this is already possible from the age of twelve, confirmed a spokesman for City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker ( SP). Up to now, gradations according to age and risk group with recommended refreshment periods of up to twelve months have also applied in Vienna. More about this in the video:

“Booster” controversial from twelve
However, the experts are not convinced that young people from the age of twelve should be included, as is the case in Vienna. Zeitlinger argues with the data: between the age group of 18 to 60-year-olds and those over 60 there was no significant difference in breakthrough infections, the expert emphasized. Therefore, a distinction according to these age groups does not make sense. The situation is different with the younger generation: in the group of 12 to 17-year-olds, for every ten infections in unvaccinated people, there is not even one infection in vaccinated people. As a result, he did not want to make a recommendation for refreshment even for 12 to 17 year olds. “For the time being, I would only recommend this for under-12s for risk groups.”
Third engraving in Austria
As of Monday, 321,360 people in Austria had received the Corona booster vaccination, 45,783 of them in Upper Austria.
The National Vaccination Board (NIG) has so far recommended the “third trick” after six to nine months for residents of old people’s and nursing homes, for people aged 65 and over, for people who have received two doses of Astra Zeneca and everyone aged 12 and over with previous illnesses and increased risk.
Anyone who has been vaccinated with Janssen once can receive another dose, preferably an mRNA vaccine, after 28 days at the earliest.
All other people aged 16 and over should be offered another vaccination after nine to twelve months, the NIG has recommended so far.
