It took three hours to rescue hundreds of people from a boat in distress. She is expected on the mainland on Tuesday.
A MSF ship has rescued more than 600 migrants and refugees from a boat in distress in the Mediterranean Sea. The crew of the “Geo Barents” brought the people on board in a three-hour operation, as the international organization announced.
Among the total of 602 people, 151 were minors and eleven were women, as Doctors Without Borders later specified.
The boat radioed an emergency call off the coast of Sicily. The Italian authorities then asked the nearby “Geo Barents” to help the people.
Rome instructed the helper ship to head for the port of Bari, where the migrants can go ashore. According to the current status, they are expected there on Tuesday morning, the helpers said.
