Regional elections: Forecasts: Conservatives gain votes in Spain elections

The left-wing central government was also put to the test in the regional elections in Spain. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was recently cornered by many problems. The opposition smells morning air.

Spain’s main opposition party is forecast to gain votes in regional and local elections. The vote was seen as a test of the conservative People’s Party (PP)’s chances of replacing socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in the general elections at the end of the year. PP General Coordinator Elías Bendodo said after the forecasts were published: “We go into the count with a good feeling and optimism.”

However, according to these unofficial figures, the PP could only hope for an absolute majority in the state parliament in the Autonomous Community of Madrid. There, the controversial regional head of government Isabel Díaz Ayuso (PP) could govern alone with 70 to 72 seats, according to the results of post-election polls published by the state TV broadcaster RTVE. A replacement in favor of the PP was also in the offing in larger cities, including Seville. Meaningful projections based on counted ballot papers were not expected until late at night.

According to these numbers, in other autonomous communities, which roughly correspond to German federal states, the PP would be dependent on the right-wing populist Vox, which functions in much the same way as the AfD. The PP, which roughly corresponds to the CDU, formed a coalition government with Vox in the autonomous community of Castile and León last year. In Andalusia, they allow themselves to be tolerated as a minority government by Vox. PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo left open whether his party would join forces more closely with Vox at regional and local level and possibly also at state level.

According to various forecasts, the PP has replaced Sánchez’s Socialists as the strongest party in some autonomous communities – for example in the important Comunidad Valenciana or in the Balearic Islands with the holiday island of Mallorca. There, however, the conservatives would be dependent on Vox if these results were to be confirmed for the formation of a government.

Around 36.6 million people were asked to vote. In twelve of the total of 17 autonomous communities, the regional parliaments were newly appointed. In addition, the city councilors and mayors of the more than 8,000 municipalities in the country and the two autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla in North Africa were newly elected.
