Illegal phone tapping is now costing Sarabia her job. President Gustavo Petro does not want any doubts about respect for human rights.
Colombian cabinet chef Laura Sarabia has been forced to vacate her post in a scandal surrounding illegal phone tapping. “My dear and esteemed colleague is leaving the government,” President Gustavo Petro said today. “This government respects human rights. There can be no doubt about that.”
Sarabia agreed to help clarify the allegations. “I will fight to defend my reputation and my good name,” wrote the 29-year-old on Twitter.

After $7,000 went missing from Sarabia’s private home earlier this year, the phones of two domestic workers were tapped. According to the Attorney General’s Office, a fake report was produced in which the nanny and the cleaning lady were linked to the Gulf Clan drug cartel.
After ten days, the lead investigator of the criminal investigation department finally requested the termination of the phone surveillance, as there was no evidence of any connection to the Gulf clan.
“Colombia has experienced this before,” said Attorney General Francisco Barbosa. In the 2000s, the DAS secret service bugged numerous judges, journalists, opposition politicians and human rights activists. When the scandal broke, several officials were sentenced to prison terms, including DAS boss Maria del Pilar Hurtado. The secret service was then dissolved.
