Nikki Haley speaks out in support of Ukraine

The US election campaign machine is running at full speed again. Republican candidate Nikki Haley now answered viewers’ questions live on CNN – and in doing so took a clear position on the Russian war against Ukraine.

In a CNN Citizens’ Question Time, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley made a clear statement about Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. The 51-year-old argued that supporting Ukraine is not only about defending freedom, but also about stopping tyranny around the world. Her remarks during this Sunday night event in Des Moines, Iowa, set a clear demarcation from Donald Trump, her closest intra-party rival and former boss.

“Victory for Ukraine a victory for all of us”

“It’s about more than Ukraine, this war is about freedom,” she underscored. “What we need to understand is that a win for Ukraine is a win for all of us.” She warned that tyrants around the world made no secret of what they were up to. Should Ukraine win, that would also send a message to countries like China, Iran and North Korea. She emphasized that the point is not to give Ukraine money or station troops there, but to work with allies to ensure Ukraine has enough equipment and ammunition to win.

In mid-May, Donald Trump made rather vague comments about Ukraine in the same TV format. When asked if he would continue to provide financial and military support to Ukraine if he won the 2024 presidential election, he replied: “I want Europe to give more money because they are laughing at us. They think we are one Bunch of idiots.” Trump also claimed that the US government is giving away so much equipment that there is no ammunition left for its own troops.

Trump also insisted he could end the more than 14-month war between Russia and Ukraine in just 24 hours. Both parties have strengths and weaknesses. When asked if Russian President Vladimir Putin was a war criminal, Trump said, “If you say he’s a war criminal, it’s going to be a lot harder to make a deal.” Haley countered: “You can’t trust a regime that marches in and tries to take people’s freedoms away.”

The next presidential election will take place on November 5, 2024. There is a wide range of candidates within the Republicans. In addition to Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has also announced his application, and former Vice President Mike Pence is also expected to follow on Wednesday. The Republicans select their candidates in an internal party primary. Some of the applicants presented themselves at performances in Iowa this weekend.

Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina, has a slim chance of success.
