On Saturday, the United States reported another incident with China. Washington is concerned – and accuses Beijing of unprofessional behavior.
The US government has expressed concern after incidents with China in the Taiwan Strait and over the South China Sea.
“It won’t be long before anyone gets hurt. That’s the concern with these unsafe and unprofessional interceptions,” National Security Council communications director John Kirby said Monday. He stressed that he could not speak for China. “But if the message that (Beijing) is trying to send is that we are not welcome or that our presence needs to be reduced (…) then that’s not going to happen.”
About a week and a half ago, there was an incident involving two military aircraft between China and the United States over the South China Sea. The US government accused China of an “unnecessarily aggressive” interception. And just on Saturday, the US reported a new incident between two ships in the Taiwan Strait. Such incidents could lead to misunderstandings, Kirby warned. “It doesn’t take much for a misjudgment or a mistake to be made and someone can get hurt.” That is unacceptable.
US President Joe Biden will hold further talks with China’s head of state and party leader Xi Jinping in due course, Kirby confirmed. “And I’m sure he will be as open with President Xi as he has been about our concerns in the past.” US-China relations have been at rock bottom for some time. China’s backing for Russia’s war in Ukraine, threats against Taiwan and the ongoing trade war are also causing controversy.
