Last generation: Sprayed private jet: Investigations against climate protectors

On Sylt, the group colored a private jet orange. Now the last generation is being accused of several crimes.

After the spraying of a private jet on Sylt by climate protection demonstrators from the Last Generation Initiative, the public prosecutor’s office is investigating the suspicion of several criminal offenses. It’s about trespassing, property damage and coercion, said Flensburg’s chief public prosecutor, Bernd Winterfeldt. The extent of the damage is still being determined.

Yesterday, five demonstrators between the ages of 21 and 60 cut through the fence of the airport on the North Sea island of Sylt, got onto the site and sprayed almost the entire aircraft with orange paint. The protesters had also removed the jet’s engine covers and sprayed paint inside the turbines. Four people stuck themselves to the wings, one person on the asphalt in front of the machine.

According to the police, the five people involved were detached from the wings and ground and examined by rescue workers. According to initial findings, no one was injured. Flight operations were not affected. The operation lasted more than four hours.

The initiative had already announced targeted protest actions against rich people for this week on Sunday. The group said the climate catastrophe was being caused “primarily by the rich”, and the group wanted to draw attention to that.

The spokesman for the last generation, Theodor Schnarr, criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) for delays in climate protection. According to the demonstrators, millionaires and billionaires contribute disproportionately to climate change. The owners of private jets, limousines and super yachts would not voluntarily abandon them. Laws are needed to reduce these emissions.
