Afghanistan: Taliban carry out second public execution

Since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan, Islamic law has applied there, and a man has now been publicly executed. He is said to have several lives on his conscience.

In Afghanistan, the ruling Taliban have publicly executed a man for the second time since taking power in the summer of 2021. The execution took place on Tuesday in the eastern province of Laghman, the Supreme Court of the militant Islamist group said. Numerous Taliban officials and residents watched the execution.

The judiciary executed the man after being found guilty of killing five people. The verdict came in accordance with Islamic jurisprudence, according to which the family of a dead person can take revenge. According to the statement, the man initially killed three men and one woman from a family. He later shot another man from the same family. The motive and the exact time of the crime were not mentioned in the statement.

The Taliban carried out the first public execution in December 2022. Since taking power in August 2021 and the chaotic withdrawal of international forces, the Taliban have drastically restricted human rights. The Islamists had initially promised to govern more moderately than during their reign of terror from 1996 to 2001. Their rule has recently become increasingly authoritarian and dogmatic.
