For months, the planned basic child security has caused a dispute in the traffic light coalition. The Greens only want to approve the budget on Wednesday with an agreement. Chancellor Scholz now appeases.
According to his own statement, Chancellor Olaf Scholz assumes that the traffic light coalition will reach an agreement on basic child security by the end of the summer break. That’s what the SPD politician said in the online format “Ask yourself” of the ARD capital studio.
“The government has agreed that basic child security is coming,” said Scholz. Two big steps have already been taken with the increase in child benefit and child allowance.
“And now comes the next thing. And we agree that we now want to clarify with one another very quickly how this should be structured. I expect that we’ll be able to do it by the end of the summer break.”
The basic security should bring together services such as child benefit, child citizenship benefit, child allowance and those from the so-called education and participation package. According to a media report, the Greens had demanded basic commitments to basic child security from Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) before the cabinet decision on the 2024 federal budget planned for next week.
Without an agreement with Lindner on the cornerstones of Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) on basic child security and adequate funding, the Greens-led ministries would not agree to the budget next Wednesday, the “Rheinische Post” reported, citing Green circles.
