Austria: After the terrorist attack in Vienna – DNA of an Osnabrücker discovered

On November 2, 2020, an Islamist killed four people in Vienna. Forensic scientists have now made an explosive find in the murdered assassin.

After the terrorist attack in Vienna in November 2020, DNA traces of an Islamist from the German city of Osnabrück were found on the murdered bomber, according to several media.

As the «Spiegel» and the Wiener Zeitung «Der Standard» quoted from investigation files, the traces were found on adhesive tape on the dummy explosive belt that the attacker was wearing. The Viennese magazine “Profil” also reported on the find. The young man from Osnabrück and another Islamist from Kassel were targeted by investigators shortly after the attack because they had previously visited the perpetrator in Vienna. They also met other like-minded people from Austria and Switzerland.

In the attack, a young IS sympathizer shot four people, including a German. More than 20 people were injured. As early as July, the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office had reported that the DNA of individual participants in the Vienna meeting was later found on the weapons used in the attack. The federal prosecutor suspects the men from Germany of failing to report planned crimes.

According to “Spiegel”, it is still unclear how and when the Osnabruecker’s DNA got onto the dummy tape. His lawyer refused to speak to the media.
