Food is piling up in the food bank’s warehouses while the number of people in need is increasing – a worrying development.
The aid organization “Die Tafel” is faced with a growing overload in Germany. An increasing number of people in need and a simultaneous decline in donations led to a nationwide state of emergency in the distribution of food, said the chairman of the board of the Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg state association, Frank Hildebrandt, the editorial network Germany (RND).
“The number of customers has almost doubled in some locations. At the same time, however, food donations have fallen by 50 percent in some cases.”
The number of volunteers, on the other hand, has remained almost constant, said the spokeswoman for the Federal Association of Tables, Anna Verres, the RND. “All of our helpers work at the absolute limit – both mentally and physically.”
The food bank and also the social association Germany see the state as responsible: “The reports from the food banks are frightening: In times of record inflation and price explosion, many can no longer even afford to eat,” said the chairwoman of the social association Germany, Michaela Engelmeier. the RND. It’s not just about people who receive citizen income, but also about millions of low-income earners and pensioners. The work of the panels deserves respect and recognition, said Engelmeier. “But the state is responsible for securing the subsistence level – and not the food banks. The volunteer work of the food banks must mean something “extra” for those affected.”
