According to a survey, a majority of adults, children and young people in Germany believe that “rather little” or “very little” is being done to combat child poverty in Germany.
The majority of adults would also be willing to pay more taxes to effectively combat child poverty. The results are part of the “Children’s Report 2023” by the German Children’s Fund, which was presented in Berlin.
72 percent of adults and 61 percent of children and young people stated that, from their point of view, “rather little” or “very little” is being done in Germany to combat child poverty. 22 percent of adults and 27 percent of children and young people think that “a lot” or “rather a lot” is happening here.
Demand for the introduction of basic child security
Against this background, the children’s welfare organization reiterated the demand it had made with other associations for years for the introduction of basic child security, which is still being discussed in the traffic light coalition. There is a clear mandate for politicians to finally take effective and comprehensive measures against child poverty in Germany.
When asked about the possible reasons for child poverty, the adults surveyed gave the most approval for the given answers “because many incomes in Germany are simply too low” and “because children affected by poverty have fewer chances of a good education and poverty continues as a result”. . Children and young people most frequently chose the answer “because many parents earn too little money”.
The majority of adults would be willing to pay more taxes if this were an effective way to combat child poverty. However, willingness has decreased slightly over the years. 66 percent of adults said “yes” to this in 2014, 64 percent in 2018 and 62 percent in the current survey.
