Prime Minister: Sweden’s Prime Minister Löfven resigns next week

Stefan Löfven has been Prime Minister of Sweden since 2014. Next week he will submit his resignation. The reason for the withdrawal is the new strong woman of the Swedish Social Democrats.

Sweden’s Social Democratic Prime Minister Stefan Löfven will step down from the Prime Minister’s office in the near future.

A spokeswoman for Löfven told the German press agency in Scandinavia that he would submit his resignation to the President of Parliament Andreas Norlén at the beginning of next week. When exactly remained open.

The move had been expected. Löfven announced in August that he would retire first as head of the party and then as head of government. He wants to give his successor the opportunity to position himself better before the next Swedish parliamentary election in late summer 2022.

Clear the way for Andersson

Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson was elected as the new leader of the Social Democrats on Thursday. She should inherit Löfven in the highest political office in the country. In view of the tight majority in the Swedish Reichstag, after Löfven’s resignation, however, she first had to convince other parties not to oppose them in a vote in parliament.

The Social Democrats have been ruling Sweden together with the Greens in a minority government for years. Löfven has been Prime Minister of Sweden since October 2014.
