Yesterday evening, Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) boarded the night train to Brussels, from where the journey continues today to Glasgow. Gewessler will be on the road for 27 hours before she arrives at the world climate conference.
Before her departure, the minister made an announcement that Austria would sign a coalition of the “highly ambitious”, she said in a radio interview at the weekend. For a few days now, some states have been discussing a paper that should be part of the final declaration. The “High Ambition Coalition COP 26 Leaders Statement” is currently supported by 27 countries, the EU and Austria were initially not on board.
The background is that Austria wants to exclude nuclear power as an energy source in any case when taking measures to protect the climate. In connection with the taxonomy regulation, which regulates which technologies are eligible for funding through the EU’s Green Deal, many discussions have been held in this regard, according to Gewessler. If atomic energy is found in it, Austria will “also take legal action,” said Gewessler.
The paper by the “highly ambitious” includes 15 points, the aim of which is to ensure that the issues that have not yet been resolved by the climate conference in Paris (2015) are quickly met and dealt with and that the industrialized countries stand by their pledges of financial aid of over 100 billion dollars . Among other things, concrete reduction targets for emissions are required.
