After the departure of two teachers from a school in Burg im Spreewald due to hostilities from the right-wing scene, the GEW teachers’ union called for the incidents to be investigated further. “I have great understanding for the teachers’ decision to leave the school because of the threats from the right-wing scene,” emphasized GEW state chairman Günther Fuchs on Thursday when asked. Fuchs demanded that the right-wing extremist incidents at the school still have to be dealt with further.
However, such right-wing extremist incidents are not a problem for the school alone, explained the union boss. “In this respect, it’s no use just pointing the finger at the school,” he warned. Rather, increased right-wing tendencies are a consequence of social development. “There must be countermeasures on many levels,” said Fuchs.
About three months ago, the teacher Max Teske and his colleague Laura Nickel published an initially anonymous fire letter about right-wing extremist incidents at their school in Burg, triggering widespread media coverage. On Wednesday both declared that they wanted to leave the school because of severe hostility from the right-wing scene.
