The EU has declared July 15 a new annual day of remembrance for victims of the global climate crisis. On this day, the victims of climate change in Europe and beyond should be commemorated in the future, the EU Commission announced on Thursday in Brussels.
This is also done to “raise awareness of concrete steps people can take at their level to prevent disasters and be better prepared for climate catastrophes.” On July 15, 2021, more than 200 people died in flood disasters in Germany and Belgium. Hundreds lost their homes.
The new commemoration day was made binding with a declaration signed by representatives of the European Parliament and the EU member states. Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans said at the ceremony that this day of remembrance is not only owed to people who have already been victims, but also to future victims. Mankind still has the chance not to slip into a climate catastrophe.
