Driving on the road at 180 kilometers per hour? Chancellor Olaf Scholz has tried to explain why this is still possible in Germany.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has again rejected the rapid introduction of a speed limit for motorways. At the citizens’ dialogue in Füssen in the Allgäu, he said that there is currently “no legislative majority” for this. He did have the issue in his election program, “but that’s not enough.” The background is that in the coalition, a speed limit is rejected by the FDP.
A woman wanted to know from Scholz why, despite the ecological problems, it was still allowed to drive on the Autobahn at 180 kilometers per hour in Germany. With a speed limit, climate-damaging carbon dioxide (CO2) can be saved, she said.
Several citizens asked Scholz about mobility issues at the so-called Chancellor Talks. Scholz campaigned in particular for the further expansion of electromobility in order to achieve climate protection goals. There must be more fast-charging stations, and e-cars must become cheaper. He also promoted the use of local public transport. The Deutschlandticket is also a measure to encourage people to switch to buses and trains.
At the so-called Chancellor Talks, Scholz wants to travel through all 16 federal states and meet more than 100 participants on site. In the past twelve months he has already been to Cottbus (Brandenburg) and Marburg (Hesse), among other places, and the series began in July 2022 in Lübeck (Schleswig-Holstein). The event in Bavaria was the eighth station. The Federal Chancellor wanted to find out what moves people in everyday life, the government explained the approach of the series.
