Summer press conference: Scholz criticizes public traffic light dispute

Traffic lights, AfD, Ukraine: Shortly before his vacation, Chancellor Scholz answers questions from the capital’s press. In the fight against climate change, he draws a positive conclusion for the traffic light coalition.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has criticized public disputes in the traffic light coalition, but sees his government as continuing to modernize Germany. He sees the AfD’s soaring as a sign of uncertainty among the population with a view to the future.

“It’s no secret: neither I nor anyone else like the fact that there was such a loud discussion,” said the SPD politician on Friday at his summer press conference on the traffic light dispute. With a view to the other projects after the summer break, he made it clear that this should be done “less loudly, but with more results”. “They should come faster then.” There was a heated argument between the SPD, the Greens and the FDP, especially over the heating law.

Scholz said certain things related to the pace of innovation that the Coalition for Germany had set out to do and that had been set in motion were being discussed for the first time. Not only the government, but also society needs an understanding that compromises are good and sensible politics. A very good solution had been found for the heating law.

modernization and mobility

The government has picked up speed with the modernization of Germany. It’s about stopping man-made climate change, said Scholz, referring to the federal government’s goal that 80 percent of electricity should come from renewable energies in 2030 – according to industry information, the proportion is currently more than half.

The power grid and the charging network for e-cars would be expanded for this purpose. Scholz also mentioned the planned construction of hydrogen-capable gas power plants and the establishment of a hydrogen network.

Look at the AfD

In view of the currently high poll numbers and the election successes of the AfD, Scholz nevertheless campaigned for confidence in the future. “For me, that means that you have to do politics in which the citizens have enough reasons to believe in a good future,” said the Chancellor.

He emphasized that in all 16 federal states the democratic parties, which treated each other with respect despite political competition, were in the large majority. He does not see a “normalization” of right-wing ideas, said Scholz in response to a question.

Regarding the AfD’s high polling values, he said: “It’s because not so many citizens are so sure about how the future will be – not at all now, but in ten, 20 and 30 years.” That is why the modernization program with innovations launched by the federal government is important for the economy because it conveys the message: “It will end well for each and every one of us.”

war in Ukraine

Despite the ongoing Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, Scholz wants to continue talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin. When asked by journalists whether he actually no longer wanted to speak to the warmonger Putin in the future, he replied: “Of course I’ll be able to talk to him again. But there’s nothing scheduled.”

When asked to what extent the success of his chancellorship depends on the success of Ukraine, Scholz replied: “As a person, as a citizen, as a German, as a European, I wish that Ukraine would be successful. And I don’t even have to do that with my office connect. That’s a concern we should all have.”
