The bridge to the annexed Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea is attacked again. Moscow accuses Ukrainian secret services, Kiev is initially reluctant to comment.
After the explosion at the bridge to the annexed Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, Russia officially spoke of an “act of terrorism”. Moscow blamed Ukrainian secret services. The Russian Anti-Terrorism Committee said the bridge was attacked by surface drones early Monday morning. Initially, there was no official confirmation from Kiev that it was involved in the incident.
Russian authorities had previously reported an “emergency” on the 19-kilometer bridge that connects the Russian mainland and Crimea, which was annexed in violation of international law in 2014. Two people were killed in their car and a teenager was injured. Photos and videos on social networks also showed significant damage to the roadway. Traffic was stopped.
The Ukrainian secret service initially did not confirm its own involvement, but only said in an initial reaction: “The bridge has “gone to sleep” again. And one … two!” Kiev later claimed responsibility for an attack on the bridge last fall. The roadway was also badly damaged at the time, but later repaired.
Ukraine, which has been defending itself against a Russian war of aggression for almost 17 months, has announced that it will liberate all occupied parts of the country as part of a counter-offensive.
According to media reports from Russia, despite the tense security situation and long controls, Russian vacationers are once again being drawn in large numbers to the annexed Crimea, which vacationers can only reach by train or car.
