War in the Ukraine: Heavy fighting in the east: Kiev reports further gains in territory

The Ukrainian armed forces are slowly fighting their way forward in the east of the country. According to their own statements, they reconquered other areas.

According to Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maljar, the Ukrainian armed forces recaptured around 18 square kilometers of the country last week. Since the start of the counter-offensive almost two months ago, 210.5 square kilometers of the country have been liberated, Maljar said on the Telegram messenger service. In total, Russia occupies more than 100,000 square kilometers, including Crimea, which was annexed in 2014.

According to Maljar, the territory gained in the past week is divided between the front section around Bakhmut and the southern front. Around seven square kilometers were liberated in the Bakhmut area, and in battles south of Orikhiv in the Zaporizhia region and south of Welyka Nowosilka on the border between the Zaporizhia and Donetsk regions, it was another eleven square kilometers.

Maljar’s information could not initially be checked independently. After the Ukrainian army began the counter-offensive a few months ago, the situation at the front has recently deteriorated, particularly in the north-east of the country, due to Russian counter-attacks. On Sunday, the deputy defense minister spoke of fierce fighting in the region.
