Parties: Dutch Greens and Social Democrats: Common list

The aim of the parties is to prevent a right-wing populist majority in parliament. The election will take place in November.

In the parliamentary elections in the Netherlands, the Social Democrats and the Greens will compete for the first time with a joint list. There was a large majority for this in votes at the base, as the two current opposition parties in Utrecht announced.

The election is on November 22nd. Greens and Social Democrats will then also run with common candidates and a common program. The declared goal is to prevent a right-wing populist majority in parliament.

In the green party GroenLinks, the approval of the members was 92 percent. In the case of the social democratic PvdA, it was almost 88 percent. The social democratic EU Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans is considered a possible joint top candidate. Both parties are already working together in a parliamentary group in the first chamber of parliament – comparable to the Bundesrat. On November 22nd, the focus will then be on the second chamber of parliament.

The previous center-right government of right-liberal Prime Minister Mark Rutte recently collapsed in a conflict over asylum policy. In the meantime, all top executives of the four previous coalition partners have announced their departure from politics – including Rutte himself, who was head of government for almost 13 years.
