An Iranian revolutionary court ruled that Djamshid Sharmahd should be executed. With a view to the fate of the German-Iranian, CDU leader Merz calls for more efforts from the federal government.
CDU leader Friedrich Merz has called on the federal government to do more in the case of the German-Iranian Djamshid Sharmahd, who was sentenced to death.
“I expect the German federal government to significantly increase its efforts to release Jamshid Sharmahd, just as other European countries are successfully trying to release their nationals who are being held captive,” Merz told the editorial network Germany (RND). The Union politician demanded that Sharmahd be released and that the Iranian government allow him to leave the country.
Iran’s Supreme Court upheld Sharmahd’s controversial death sentence at the end of April. Nothing formally stands in the way of enforcement. A revolutionary court held the 68-year-old responsible for a terrorist attack in February.
His family vehemently denied the allegations. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) had also called on Tehran to reverse the “absolutely unacceptable” and arbitrary verdict. Merz wanted to visit the German-Iranian in prison, but according to his own statements, he was refused entry.
